I do wholeheartedly apologize for the serious lack of information recently regarding the upcoming “Velocipede and Tweed Indeed”. Previously unforeseen personal setbacks have prevented me from giving this event the proper attention it deserves. I truly believe that we are back on track and will move forward with the utmost haste. That being said, the date of the event has been postponed until Saturday, April 30th. Our gathering time will be at the hour of 10:00 a.m. with a departure at 11:00.
We are hosting a “picnic affair” event this year. There are several locations along the route that lend themselves to the spreading out of a blanket and basking in the warm springtime sunshine, enjoying a bit of lunch and socialization. The exact spot for the picnic has yet to be determined. We are in consultation with the neighborhood civic leaders discussing our options.
I’ve personally explored the route and have found it to be an excellent location. It is a remarkably calm and picturesque path through one of the oldest and most historic areas of the city. The first half of the journey will be along Cliff Drive. The drive twists and turns along the limestone cliffs high above the Missouri river through the wooded isles of one of Kansas City’s oldest parks, Kessler Park. Originally built for Sunday rides in horse-and-buggy, Cliff Drive is now used by joggers, walkers, bicyclists. Motor vehicles are completely and utterly banned from this road on the weekends.
The second half of the route will take us through the residential area surrounding the park. We will pass by many turn of the century homes including the very first “million dollar home” in Kansas City, originally built by the country’s wealthiest lumber baron, R.A. Long. This stately structure is now home to the Kansas City Museum. Along this route are also several historic memorials, 2 castles, the old city reservoir and a beautiful colonnade.
The work on this event has only just begun. If you wish to participate in the planning and execution of this popular parade please contact us at TweedRideKC@gmail.com Your help will be greatly appreciated.
